West Virginian songwriter and folklorist Billy Edd Wheeler is perhaps best known as the composer of "Jackson," a huge hit duet in 1967 for Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, as well as for writing the grim folk ballad, "Coal Tattoo," which has become an anthem for bluegrass and old-timey artists such as Hazel Dickens and Kathy Mattea.
