T. G. Sheppard was one of the hot Top 40 stars of mid-1970s country music: in 1974 he hit #1 with his first single, "Devil In The Bottle," and had a string of #1 and Top Ten successes that stretched into the next decade. He sang in the same louche, romantic style as Conway Twitty, and his fortunes flagged in the late '80s, when the tide of honkytonk-oriented "neotrad" artists swept the charts. Yet, he was remarkably successful in his decade-long peak... Here's a quick look at his career...
T. G. Sheppard "All Time Greatest Hits" (Warner, 1991)
Better than average '80s country, balancing relatively rootsy vocals with somewhat synthy arrangements. Sheppard's pretty much following in Conway Twitty's footsteps, with teensy hints of Kenny Rogers and country rock ala the Eagles also in the mix. Slightly more rugged than many of his popped-out contemporaries, with a few good songs like "Party Time" and "Do You Want To Go To Heaven" that are worth checking out. (Note: this album and Super Hits, below, are exactly the same, just with slightly cheesier artwork on the newer version. Although Sheppard has done a lot of re-recordings, these are all the original hit versions...)
