Although she was born in Denmark, singer Chris Nielsen emigrated to Canada and became one of that country's most successful country singers of the 1970s. Recording both solo and in duets with her husband, singer-producer R. Harlan Smith, Nielsen racked up a number of hits and garnered two nominations for a Juno Award (Canada's equivalent of a Grammy.) Here's a quick look at Nielsen and Smith's music...
Chris Nielsen & R. Harlan Smith "Stolen Moments" (Royalty Records, 2004)
The husband-wife duo of Nielsen and Smith were Canada's answer to George & Tammy, or perhaps Conway and Loretta... This CD is a collection of their most popular duets...
Chris Nielsen "Original Hits/Original Recordings From The '70s And '80s" (Royalty Records, 2007)
R. Harlan Smith "Original Hits/Original Recordings" (Royalty Records, 2006)
Chris Nielsen "Lady From Virginia" (Royalty Records, 1975) (LP)
(Produced by R. Harlan Smith)
From Virginia? Yeah, right... as if. I think this was her first solo album... The title track is one of many originals penned by R. Harlan Smith (about half the album) while the set is is rounded out by covers of country "girl" songs such as "Paper Roses" and Jessi Colter's "Storms Never Last" as well as (yikes) her version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "I Don't Know How To Love Him." There's also one song credited to Chris Nielsen, "I Love You In A Song." Unfortunately, there are no credits for the backing musicians, so they could have been either her own band or some Canadian studio dudes.
Chris Nielsen "Let Me Go Down Easy" (Royalty Records, 1977-?) (LP)
This album includes four songs written by R. Harlan Smith, two by Russell Thornberry, and one by Nielsen called "Funny Little Girl."
Chris Nielsen "Chris Nielsen" (Royalty Records, 1979) (LP)
Chris Nielsen "My Way Or The Highway" (Royalty Records, 1988) (cassette only)
