The New Lost City Ramblers -- the quartet of John Cohen, Tom Paley, Tracy Schwarz and Mike Seeger -- were the East Coast's ultimate old-timey revivalists. As well as being a great musical group they were active folklorists, as crate diggers, song-catchers and concert promoters, helping broaden and define the scope and flow of the 1960s folk revival... As a band, the Ramblers recorded many classic albums, and each member went on to create equally compelling solo work... Here's a quick look at their music...

The New Lost City Ramblers "Earth Is Earth Sung By The New Lost City Bang Boys" (Folkways, 1961)
An 8-song EP of racy "hokum" songs, including one, "When Lulu's Gone," which Roy Acuff once recorded under an assumed name -- The Bang Boys -- back in the '30s; he used an alias because the Opry regular didn't want his name to be associated with smutty material. The Ramblers keep up the joke, dubbing themselves "Wilbur Seeger," "McKinley Cohen" and "Delmore Paley."
