Lionel Long (1939-1998) was an Australian folk-and-country singer with a special love of historical ballads and Australian culture. His first big hit was a popular 1961 version of "Waltzing Matilda," which set the tone for his later records, although as the 'Sixties progressed, Long widened his lens and tackled different topics and styles of music. Long branches out into mainstream country music, with a fairly hip, contemporary set, covering four Merle Haggard songs, one by Buck Owens, Shel Silverstein's "Ned Kelly," and a Carter Family oldie ("Wildwood Flower") for good measure. There are also two originals composed by Lionel Long, "Believe Me Lord" and "Sugarcane Country Blues."
