Oklahoma songwriter Henson Cargill (1941-2007) made a big splash with the catchy, topically-themed 1967 hit, "Skip A Rope," which topped the Country charts and crossed over to the Pop Top 40. He followed this success with other songs built on the same model: simple melodies wed to socially conscious lyrics were Cargill's early calling card, and seemed like a good match for the mood of the times. The formula petered out, though, and Cargill never matched that first early hit... He made infrequent appearances on the country charts throughout the '70s, but retired from performing in the early '80s, when he opened a club in Oklahoma City, recording two more albums during that decade, while basically bowing out of the showbiz spotlight.
