A bunch of folks write to ask if I know who did this or that song, or if I know where to find a copy of this or that album. Generally, in my overly helpful manner, I try to help whenever possible... (we'll start with an example of that Thidwick-ian behavior on my part...) Occasionally, though, I am stumped. Does anyone out there know anything that might help out with these desperate cries for help?

Hi,
I visited your web site and I liked the information you provide on cuban
music. I recently got into cuban music after watching after watching David
Byrne's show Sessions at West 57th. The show featured the afro-cuban
all-stars. I've been looking to find out what the meaning or the difference
between a son, afro-son, son montuno, guajira, bolero, cancion is but can't
find any site that explains the differences. I know that its probably
different styles or rithyms but am not for sure? Can you briefly explain
the difference or can you direct me to a source where I can find this
information out? I appreciate your help. Thanks
Carlos
Good question. Actually, I hesitate to give an decisive answer, since it's all a little fuzzy to me, too. I suspect that many of these terms are used interchangably (or incorrectly) by various writers, and that the boundaries between various styles of Cuban music often are not that clear-cut to begin with. It's all about creative experimentation, anyway, right? A couple of the terms you ask about are easy enough that even I can answer them... "Cancion" just means "song" in spanish; so does "son"... sort of... and a bolero is a slow, sentimentally romantic love song. Boleros were pretty much the universal popular song style in Latin America during most of the 20th Century -- even the Brazilians recorded them! For the other stuff, I'd recommend you check out some of the folks who are more heavily into this stuff than I am -- my Cuban Music Links Page includes a few sites that have glossaries and information on different styles... Hope this helps!

Dear Joe:
I like your site. Congratulations!
I want to know about cuban music midi files on the web.
Can you help me?
Thank you very much.
Martha
Actually, I'm not really into the whole downloading music on the Web thing, so I'm afraid I can't be of much help. Sorry... I'm sure there must be zillions of sites out there, though...

Dear Joe Six pack,
I would like more information on TCD - 064 Mariano Merceron "Yo Tengo Un
Tumbao" Is it available for purchase? If so please give me all the details
(price, s&h etc...).
Also Mariano Merceron is one of my all time favorites. I've been looking
for one of his albums but I've had no luck. The album is "Merceroneando"
Mariano Merceron y su Orquesta. It was released in 1972 by possibly
RCA Camden Records. This album is AWESOME! I hope you can help me.
Thank you so much for your time.
Sincerely,
Eduardo Perez
Great record... I'm sure it can be found out there somewhere. But just to clarify real quickly -- I'm not connected to any of the record labels I write about, and I don't do mailorder or any other kind of commerical stuff on this website. I don't make a dime on it... that's why I can afford to be honest about my opinions.
B-U-U-U-UT, in a few cases I do steer folks to specific businesses that might be able to help them find some of the obscure stuff I write about. In this case, I'd recommend either Descarga Distribution or Down Home Music. Hope this helps!

Hi Joe,
was searching for french pop music on yahoo where i found your site. I am
looking for some info on a singer called Norma Ray who had a hit with a
song called Tous Les maux darmoux.
are ideas??
thanks
wendy
Well, you've got me on that one. Sorry. I'm actually not a super-expert on French pop, so I usually refer these kind of questions to the illustrious Mr. Pink Frankenstein, host of les swinging Sixties dance parties known as "Bardot A-Go-Go". His website is at http://www.frankenstein.com

Dear James,
Sorry, but I really have no idea. Sorry I can't be of more assistance. Besides, if he's protective of his privacy, there's probably a reason for it... which I can respect. That's why, for instance, I altered your e-mail address, along with those of other Slipcue readers, so that people won't bug you.

in 1972, vanguard records released an lp by a guy named bob frank. vsd
6582 to be precise. it was produced by gary walker and cletus haegert.
associate producer was david wilkes.
most of the songs were about winos, drinking, durgs, jail etc....just a
guy and a flat top. some harp ever once in a while....same with a
fiddle..mostly a guy and a flat top.
i have been trying to find out what happened to bob frank. did he quit
the music business and started teaching political science at a wisconsin
junior college or what? or did he live his songs until they killed him?
if you are not familar with the lp i would be glad to send you a tape of
it. maybe it would jog your memory circuits.
any info would be helpful.

I haven't heard of this fellow, but maybe one of our readers has... Anybody?

Thanks for working so hard on it. I have just one favor to ask of you. :)
I'm desperate to either buy or somehow get ahold of David Bryne's Brazilian
Classics Vol. 4. It's out of print and I've asked the people at Luaka Bop
if they'll ever re-issue it and they say they won't. Do you have this on
CD? LP? Tape? Do you have an extra copy of it? If so, can I buy it? If
you don't want to sell it, can you make mp3s out of the tracks and send them
to me? I'm dying to get ahold of Tom Ze's work from the 70s! (I'd like vol
5 too, but I'm most interested in 4.)
Anyway you can help out?
Thanks,
William
Many, many people wrote me about this one -- and the good news is, yay! Both those Tom Ze albums are back in print as of Fall, 2000, and look to be available for the foreseeable future. Check with Luaka Bop Records for all the info... The big question now is, what is up with the fab Joao Gilberto CD on World Pacific still out of print? Write Capitol Records and demand to know the reason!!
