A bunch of folks write to ask if I know who did this or that song, or if I know where to find a copy of this or that album. Generally, in my overly helpful manner, I try to help whenever possible... (we'll start with an example of that Thidwick-ian behavior on my part...) Occasionally, though, I am stumped. Does anyone out there know anything that might help out with these desperate cries for help?

That would be Jorge Ben, off his 1974 album, "Tabua Da Esmerelda".

Hi Joe. You don't know me. I found you by putting "Brazilian pop" in my search
engine. But maybe you can help me. I am looking for the title and artist's
name of a song I heard that I can't get out of my head. All I can remember is
that it's sung in English, it sounds a lot like Brazil 66, and the lyrics
contain something to the effect of "and then your brother... and then your
mother..." and so on. I think it was pretty popular, at one time. Does this
make any sense? I'd appreciate any help.
Thanks, Ray.
Uh... is it Marcos Valle's "Crickets Sing For Ana Maria?" on the "Samba '68" album?

Thanks so much joe... thats the one. I found it for $11 at CDNOW.COM. Thanks again!
Whew! Another job well done.
Dear Joe:
Nice site. I also love the music of Brazil, and I was in a Jazz Bar in Fortaleza two days ago, and heard an artist called Ana Carolina. Can't find anywhere to buy it. Any clues? You might want to check it out. Also, on the pop side, and I mean very pop side, I've always like Kid Abelha "meio desligado" is the album. On the serious side, Virginia Rodrigues. There is also a record label called Puntamayo that has a CD "Cape Verde" which is a compliation, and one of the best artists is Nana Matias, whom I can't find anyplace either.
So, Joe, if you've got a lead on ana or nana, I'd appreciate it.
Anyone?

Thanks for working so hard on it. I have just one favor to ask of you. :)
I'm desperate to either buy or somehow get ahold of David Bryne's Brazilian
Classics Vol. 4. It's out of print and I've asked the people at Luaka Bop
if they'll ever re-issue it and they say they won't. Do you have this on
CD? LP? Tape? Do you have an extra copy of it? If so, can I buy it? If
you don't want to sell it, can you make mp3s out of the tracks and send them
to me? I'm dying to get ahold of Tom Ze's work from the 70s! (I'd like vol
5 too, but I'm most interested in 4.)
Anyway you can help out?
Thanks,
William
Many, many people wrote me about this one -- and the good news is, yay! Both those Tom Ze albums are back in print as of Fall, 2000, and look to be available for the foreseeable future. Check with Luaka Bop Records for all the info... The big question now is, what is up with the fab Joao Gilberto CD on World Pacific still out of print? Write Capitol Records and demand to know the reason!!
