One of the great things about the Slipcue site is getting e-mail from people all over the world... including irate readers from Brazil. I've been wanting to do a "letters column" on the site for a while now, and finally found some free time to encode some of the more choice comments. Strangely enough, I actually like e-mails that are critical of what I write (almost) as much as the ones that tell me what a swell guy I am... I really believe in the value of critical thinking, and I figure that it should cut both ways, since taste is such a subjective thing to begin with. So let's just start with the good stuff, all people who have spotted me for the fraud I am... and this first one's a doozy!
(By the way, I also get lots of positive mail about the Brazilian section... it's not all heartache and misery!)

Subject: Brazilian Artist Ratings

Dear Sir,
When people don't understand a certain subject they should just not say anything at all.
It's obvious that you are far too ignorant to be rating Brazilian music. The fact that you're criticizing such
artists as Tom Jobim, Milton Nascimento, Ivan Lins and Djavan is an outrage! These Brazilian artists are
extremely well known and highly respect world wide..
Musicians from all over the world, as well as in the US have gone over to Brazil to record with these artists. If
you have bad music taste, you should not have put this on a website; keep your ignorance to
yourself...please! .
This is an embarrassment! If you want to criticize music, then criticize the trash that
makes top 100 in your country. I'm not only talking about your bad critique of Brazilian music, but also world
wide...bottom line is: if you don't understand about a certain subject, please keep quiet.
Um... okay. I'm not sure, but I think we might have different taste in music.

Has nothing to do with a critic's opinion or whether or not if YOU (I am speaking of
the editorial you, not you personally) like it or don't. What counts is the buyer.
I get so tired of people who need to be right or the knowledgeable one. Gimme a break!
I just wanted to tell you and your readers to get a life and stop criticizing!
A lover of Brazilian music,

P.S.
Plus thanks for the website.
Dear Donna, Hi -- thanks for the nice feedback... I sometimes feel that way, too. On the other hand, they're just my dumb opinions & I figure people can learn to read between the lines and make up their own minds, taking into account what a big blowhard I obviously am. I'm confused, though: which part of your letter was sarcastic; before or after the signature? #8-) -- Joe
