Here's a short list of some of the best country records I know...
Dolly Parton & Porter Wagoner "The Essential" (RCA Nashville, 1997)
Dolly started off her career as the "girl singer" on the Porter Wagoner show, replacing the equally hickalicious Norma Jean. Porter certainly helped Dolly find her voice as a traditonally-oriented artist in a countrypolitan town. The duets they recorded when they were still musical partners are mostly pretty good, a lot better than you might think... and the song selection on this collection (culled from the zillions of duet albums they put out together) is great. Well worth checking out, especially since it isn't likely to stay in print forever.
Hoyt Axton "Road Songs" (A&M, 1977)
A killer best-of with only, like, two songs on it that I don't care for... And the ones that I like? Awesome! "Boney Fingers," "Flash of Fire," "When The Morning Comes," and the ever-popular "No No Song"... this album rocks! And with friends like Linda Ronstadt, Nicolette Larson and James Burton hanging out -- why not? By the way: Hoyt's mama, Mae Axton? She wrote "Heartbreak Hotel." How's that for a fine family tradition?
